Popham Beach State Park!

Today I had the incredible opportunity to take a day trip to the Popham Beach State Park near Bath, Maine. As a young child I have a fond memory of visiting this beach and enjoying the shallow pools and scenic vista. Today, I returned for the first time since this childhood trip and the views did not disappoint. I started by driving past the park's entrance and continuing down Popham Road to find Spinney's Oceanfront Restaurant. There I enjoyed an order of steamed mussels with my toes buried in the sand.

The restaurant is on the end of the peninsula that the beach extends along. Beside the restaurant, a fort sits on top of the rocks overlooking the water as the currents rushes by below. I recommend starting off the day by checking out the view from this fort and snapping a few photo's of your own. There is a beautiful white sand beach that is free to enter as well.

I would suggest that you pay the small entry fee into the state park so that they can continue to keep these areas beautiful. Once you are in the state park, you will walk onto the beach and see an island so close it looks like you can walk to it. You actually can! When the tide is low, there is a clear walkway out to this island which provides an even better view of the other islands in the surrounding area. Bring plenty of water and be prepared to spend the majority of the day here. It will be hard to leave once you walk into this state park, at each turn there is a new surprise you will find. The combination of evergreen's along the coast, with the winding rivers from the ocean leading inland, you won't find another beach like this one.
